Erasmus+ UK Internships

Do you have Erasmus+ funding from the 2014-2020 that you haven't already spent?

Do you have EU students who are eager to come to the UK to do an ambitious internship to improve their English and gain work experience, in order to turbo charge their future careers?

If so, Professionals UK is well placed to assist you in placing your Erasmus+ funded students in internships across the UK.

Erasmus+ Key points:

  • Students coming under the Erasmus+ programme, need a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) in order to apply for a Tier 5 Government Approved Exchange visa (now a requirement after Brexit).
  • The CoS can be obtained from Ecorys Ltd (for K102 project VET students) and The British Council (for K103 projects - Higher Education, Foundation programme or BTECs levels 4 or 5, higher National Diplomas).
  • Additional details can be found at: https://www.erasmusplus.org.uk/visa-and-certificate-of-sponsorship

The Placement and Visa Process

  1. Professionals UK set up and confirm the internships and placements for the participants covered by the programme.
  2. Students/agents apply for the CoS from Ecorys Ltd or The British Council (taking up to 8 weeks)
  3. Once the CoS is awarded, students apply for the visa online (taking up to 3 weeks for visa to be issued)

The cost of the visa is currently £259 (see:
https://www.gov.uk/government-authorised-exchange for full details).

Ecorys Ltd and the British Council do not charge for the Certificate of Sponsorship.

For specific Erasmus+ projects, the Project Co-ordinator needs to contact Ecorys Ltd and The British Council by email confirming: the number of participants involved; the programme; the Key Action and the Sector under which the placement is funded; and expected placement start and end dates.

Certificate of Sponsorship Requirements

As part of the application for the CoS, the following documents are required:

  1. Completed Participant Information Form
  2. Photocopy of the participant’s passport pages (including the front and back cover)
  3. Completed Letter of Support from the Sending Organisation
  4. Completed Letter of Support from Host Organisation (template provided)
  5. Copy of the final contract between the local National Agency and the Sending Organisation including annex 1, showing mobilities.
  6. Evidence of a Criminal Record Check (only for learners and/or staff undertaking a work placement with regulated activity in relation to children)

How long will it take?

It is advisable to start the CoS application process 11 or more weeks before the placement starts. The Cos can take 8 weeks to be processed, and the visa 3 weeks.

Professionals UK will endeavour to confirm placement company as soon as possible and require 4 to 6 weeks minimum.

Eligibility:

  1. These conditions are only valid for students travelling to the UK with “Erasmus+” funding from a project which was awarded in any call between 2014 and 2020. This is until the funding for 2020 projects is finished, and all the 2020 projects come to an end. This could potentially run until 2023 for some projects.
  2. If the funding to be used is from 2021 funding rounds, then the British Council (for Higher Education) and Ecorys (for the VET sector) assert they are not obliged to accept any visa application, as the UK is now out of the EU and is not contributing or benefitting directly from the Erasmus+ programme. However, they may look into offering COS on a discretionary basis.

We hope that this information is some good news and will enable you to start sending students to the UK again!

While it requires a little more effort than previously, partners have found the process to be relatively straight forward and a great option to give their students rich work and life experiences in the UK, which will set them up well for the future.
